Mahomes, Cousins and Mariota Star in ‘Quarterback’, Premieres on Netflix Tomorrow
With the incredible success of Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’, the streaming giant was always going to commission, produce and distribute more sports documentaries.
The Formula 1 docu-series, widely credited with boosting the sport’s popularity around the world, paved the way for ‘Full Swing’, a golf-centric series, ‘Break Point’, which follows the stars of the tennis world, and the recently released ‘Tour de France: Unchained’ – chronicling the journeys of cyclists participating in the world’s most prestigious road race.
Considering its growth globally – through the London, Mexico and Germany Games, and the Global Markets Program – the NFL was the next logical sport for Netflix’s cameras to follow, and tomorrow sees the premiere of their docu-series ‘Quarterback’, which they hope can recreate Drive to Survive’s success.
Quarterback tells the tale of three signal-callers with differing levels of success within the league – the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, considered by many as the best in the game today, the Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins, a dependable veteran with years of experience in the NFL, and the Atlanta Falcons’ Marcus Mariota, a quarterback battling to keep his starting spot.
Following the three quarterbacks throughout the 2022 season, the series gives viewers a look at Mahomes, Cousins, and Mariota’s lives on and off the field. From scoring jaw-dropping touchdowns, winning and losing games, and having every fan in a stadium chant their name, to working with trainers, perfecting their craft in practice and spending time with friends and family, the docu-series reveals everything that goes into operating at the sports’ highest level.
Netflix announced the project in late February and released the trailer last month, giving fans a first look at what they’re calling “the toughest job in all of sports”.

Speaking to Netflix, legendary Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, whose Omaha Productions created the series in association with NFL Films, said: “Look – we’ve seen quarterbacks mic’d up for a game. We’ve certainly seen training camp. But we’ve never followed a quarterback throughout the entire season to see what he does Sunday night after a big win, after a brutal loss on a last-second field goal – what they do on Mondays and Tuesdays on their off days.
“Are they hanging out? Are they playing golf? Are they in the weight room and watching film and grinding for that next game? Which is the answer, by the way, not to give it away. There is no golf in the season.”
Despite the promise of unprecedented access, some conversations and aspects of the quarterbacks’ lives were not recorded for the show, especially Mahomes’ conversations with his head coach.
The Chiefs’ Andy Reid, who’s been in charge of the team since 2013, allowed his superstar quarterback to participate in the series on the condition that none of his meetings with Mahomes were recorded, and Netflix agreed.
Considered the most important position in the game, quarterbacks have long since earned the NFL’s biggest contracts – with Mahomes himself signing a 10-year, $503 million extension in 2020 – and fans finally get to see exactly why these players earn such eye-watering sums.
The series will be available to stream on Netflix from 8 am BST tomorrow morning.
